When the apostles hear of Philip preaching in Samaria and baptizing the people, they send Peter and John to “lay hands on them” “that they might receive the Holy Spirit” (Acts 8:5-17). Their Baptism was incomplete until they received the Sacrament of Confirmation. With this sacrament we receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit:
Wisdom – enables us to judge correctly the things of God and helps us appreciate Divine things.
Understanding – provides insights into the mysteries of Faith so that we may live by them and be salt of the earth.
Counsel – advice by which we receive the Holy Spirit’s light to guide us in practical matters.
Fortitude – love of God with a Christ-like courage that disposes us to do the Good and live Rightly in spite of difficulty.
Knowledge – the ability to judge according to the truths of the Faith and make proper Faith-filled decisions and choices.
Piety – a reverence for God as the Eternal and Supreme Being from whose effusive Love come all good things.
Fear of the Lord – an awesome/reverential respect for God as the author of all creation and the source of life. It is the foundation of all the other gifts for it humbly submits to the truth that God is God and I am not!
