How big is a Billion? 1Nov2015

If you had a billion dollars – $1,000,000,000 – and you decided in your generous magnanimity to give away a thousand dollars – $1,000 – every day, how long would it take for you to go broke? Over 2,700 years!!! Think about that the next time you hear about one of our billionaires giving away several million dollars of his wealth.

Here are some other interesting facts:

A billion days ago would take you back to more than 2.7 million years before the birth of Christ!

A billion hours ago would move you forward to over 112,000 years before Christ!

A billion minutes ago would almost take us back to the death of the youngest Apostle, John, who wrote the book of Revelation, from which today’s first reading is taken.

One more thought… the world’s population right now is over 7 billion. How many people have lived and died since the beginning of time until now!?!

The purpose of this little exercise is to show just how mind boggling large numbers can be and then to consider how many Saints there might be in Heaven – all of them giving praise and worship to God.

I, John… had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count… wearing white robes and holding palm branches.

Many of us like to “stand out” in a crowd – no matter how big or small – with the eyes and ears of those around us focused on the “unholy” trinity – me, myself and I. In John’s vision, however, just the opposite is portrayed. The eyes and ears and hearts of the multitude are focused on the Lamb. He is the center of attention and John tells us that these people are those who have washed their robes and made them white in the Blood of the Lamb.

Many preachers like to talk about how we can attain heaven but, if we really want to be part of the multitude in John’s vision, I must sacrifice my EGO and wash my robe in the Blood of the Lamb. This would be impossible to do were His Blood never shed for each of us.
