Do we place our politics over our religion?

In this Sunday’s reading Moses predicts a new prophet who is to come.  In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus is the new prophet who comes and speaks with power and authority unlike the scribes who knew the Law of Moses but lorded it over the people.

Jesus spoke with authority and cast out demons.  He left us a Church which speaks to us with power and authority through Christ’s Vicar and the bishops in communion with him.  Do we listen to the Church when she speaks with authority and power?  Or do we place our politics over our religion?

Throughout the world Christianity and especially Catholicism is under attack.  In the country of our celebrant today, Nigeria, Muslim radicals are killing Catholics who are attending Mass.  Protestant missionaries are killed for preaching the bible.  In our own country, Catholics are under attack by this administration which is forcing Catholics organizations to provide contraceptives and abortafacients to employees thereby going against Church teaching.  Are we listening to the Church, are we listening to Christ?  Or, do we place our politics over our religion?  Let us reflect.  Let us remember that Christ will come again at the end of the world with power and authority.  Will we be prepared?
